About Dow Jones stocks
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the most-quoted but least-mechanical of the three major US stock indices on this site. The 30 constituents are picked by an index committee using qualitative judgement about which large, established companies best represent the broader market — there is no automatic rule based on size or sector weight, and turnover is low compared with the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100. The curated nature of the index means the DJIA tends to feature mature, dividend-paying large-caps with long histories of consistent operations.
The price-weighting mechanic is the other distinguishing feature. A higher-priced share has more index influence regardless of how big the company is, which has historically produced quirks that don't show up in market-cap-weighted indices. The screener applies the Investment Score and base-valuation models to each constituent on its own fundamentals, so the page lets users evaluate the names independently of the index's weighting mechanic.
What this page is for
This page is a screener and reference surface, not editorial coverage. The list above refreshes with each data update; the methodology, FAQ, and related categories below stay in place so the page is useful both for somebody arriving from a specific search and for somebody scanning the index for the first time.
If you want to value a single Dow Jones stock end-to-end rather than scan the index, the Invest Viable Valuator walks through the same models we use to compute the base valuations on this page.
How we screen Dow Jones
A company appears on this page when it's a current constituent of the Dow Jones Industrial Average — the curated list of 30 large, established US companies maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices.
- Current constituent of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). Membership is curated by an index committee — there is no automatic mechanical rule for inclusion or removal.
- The index is price-weighted (not market-cap-weighted), which makes it structurally different from the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100.
- Investment Score and base valuation computed by the same models used elsewhere on Invest Viable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average?
A curated list of 30 large, established US companies maintained by an index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. The DJIA is one of the oldest US stock indices in continuous publication and is the most widely-quoted benchmark in popular news coverage of the US market, even though it's not the most representative.
Why is the Dow only 30 stocks?
The index was designed to track a small number of representative large-cap industrial leaders when it launched in 1896, and the small constituent count has been preserved as a tradition rather than a methodology choice. The S&P 500 is the more academically representative US large-cap benchmark; the Dow remains widely tracked for historical continuity.
How does price-weighting affect the index?
A higher-priced stock has more influence on Dow movements than a lower-priced one, regardless of market cap. This is why a stock split historically reduced a constituent's index influence even though the company's market cap was unchanged. The mechanic is unique to the Dow — most other major indices are market-cap-weighted.
Are Dow constituents always high-yielding or value-style?
On average the index leans toward mature, dividend-paying large-caps because the committee favours established names. But individual constituents range across the value-growth-quality spectrum. The screener evaluates each name on its own fundamentals.
Does Invest Viable recommend specific Dow Jones stocks?
No. This page is a screener and analysis surface, not a recommendation list. Each stock is shown with its underlying financial data, base valuation, and Investment Score so you can do your own research. Invest Viable does not publish buy or sell calls on individual securities.
