The checks sit in three categories: Valuation (price against the three base valuations and against earnings, book value, sales and EBITDA, each at a fixed threshold), Financial Strength (interest and debt coverage, leverage, liquidity, and the trend in margins and free cash flow) and Performance (revenue and earnings growth, consistency and quality, returns on equity, assets and invested capital, and free cash flow generation). Most checks are pass or fail, scoring one point or zero; a small number use a three-tier scale. The points earned are divided by a fixed denominator of 31 and scaled to 0–100.
